Experience the midnight sun by the Arctic Circle at the Suomu resort.
The Arctic Circle classic, Suomu resort by route E 63, lies in a beautiful pine forest along small lakes and a stream. It nestles by Suomutunturi-hill only a short ride to the natural sandy beaches of Lake Kemijärvi.
Suomu spring is short, snows melt in mid May and the migrating birds return. Light is the main element, plants recover from the winter at amazing speed with no nightly rest periods. Spring-lovers travel north and enjoy a second spring once their own is over. The ice
break-up at the Lake and River Kemijärvi is also an experience.
Early June is excellent
hiking time. The gentle green of the budding plants and
24 hours of daylight keep the animals busy with nest building & rearing their young. There is no night. Midday is warm and light, midnight is cool and light. Holidaymakers slow down as the day goes on and on. No need to be back at base for the night. Hours of the clock loose their meaning. Midnight owls enjoy daytime activities at their chosen times and midday naps will not cut out any valuable holiday daylight hours.
Cruising and fishing on the lake and rivers and
cycling are popular.
Paddling, kayaking and canoeing are also possible in Suomu.
Visit
historical sights or
the town of Kemijärvi or make other
day-trips by car.
July deepens the greens in the woods and lake warms up.
Cloudberries ripen and birds are busy feeding their young. The quick arctic summer, with sun warming the nights, reaches its peak and standard Scandinavian summer clothes are a good idea.
August is for berry-pickers. Blueberries in every bush and mushrooms hiding in long grass beacon the gatherers. Evenings darken and nights get nippy.
September’s dark nights cool the air and hiking is at its best. The
autumn colours blossom. Particularly the large wetland’s displays are splendid with their reds, yellows and browns. Suomu slopes are coved with a blanket of reds, yellows and greens. The lingonberries shine red on the deep green pine forest floor, who will pick them all? The small arctic birch varies between yellow, orange, brown and red depending on their species and the weather. Each scenery is a picture. Take along your digi-cameras.
The autumn hunting season will go on until the winter.
In October, the
swans will gather at their Kemijärvi feeding grounds to fatten their bellies and strengthen their young for the long autumn migration. You can spot hundreds of them. In addition, reindeer can be observed in hundreds as the reindeer herders gather their herds for autumn rodeos. Our local guides can lead you to the right spots to find both the birds and the reindeer. Exotic experiences abound.
Welcome to Suomu during summer! Enjoy endless hours of sunshine and light in our pristine wilderness.
