Lake Kemijärvi, located next to Suomutunturi, is the largest lake in the Kemijoki river basin, covering an area of 230 squarekilometres. Numerous islands, narrow straits and sheltered bays create the conditions for exciting canoe trips or even water skiing. The clear waters and sandy beaches, shaped by nature, are inviting day spots for swimmers and sun worshippers. Lake Kemijärvi is a very fishylake, wherenumerous fishing competitions are held in summer.

Canoes, funnel boards and other water sports equipment can be rented from Suomutunturi at low prices.

Hiking trails

Suomutunturi has outdoor trails for different levels of difficulty, which you can use to climb the fells or hike near water bodies.

The hiking trail to the top of Suomutunturi offers great views from the top of the fjord to Kemijärvi. The trail starts from the hotel and ascends along the ski slopes towards the top of the fjord. Along the trail, which descends behind the fells, the trail bends into two mouths. Turning off at the junction, you can continue to the Nurkkalampi lodge. From the junction, continue straight on to return to the starting point. The trail continues along the footpath towards the slopes of the eastern slopes of the Finnish Alps, where the second lodge is located at the lower level. There are several other hiking trails in the surrounding area. There are several outdoor fireplaces on the trails.

For birdwatchers, Suomutunturi has plenty to see. There is also an observation tower in the area. You can watch the spring cranes, moonbirds, lapwings and barn owls. As well as the egrets, springs and, of course, the national bird of our country - the whooper swan.

Suomu Hunting Experience

Hunting, fishing and camping have increased in Finland, especially during the exceptional conditions in 2020 and 2021. Bothlocal and non-resident hunting hasalsoincreased due to Lapland's excellent game populations.

Although Finnish hunting has become more recreational over the years, it still plays an important role for thepeopleinvolved, their families and society.

The Suomu Hunting Experience is an opportunity for beginners to get to know the sport and learn to hunt in a safe environment. For experienced hunters, the Suomu Hunting Experience creates unique conditions for small game hunting. It isalsoworth remembering that moose hunting in the north starts more than a month earlier than in southern Finland.
